Chloe Sullivan made her debut as part of the DC Universe in the TV show Smallville when the pilot episode aired in 2001. Before that, she wasn’t an actual character from the comics, but since then, she has made an appearance.
Chloe Sullivan is played by Allison Mack, and appears in every season of Smallville. She befriended Clark Kent in high school, and became one of his most trusted allies in his journey to becoming Superman. She helped him in his fight against villains as she was a reporter for the Smallville High School newspaper. She tracked citizens who had been infected by Kryptonite during Clark’s arrival to Earth and caused problems for the city of Smallville.
Since she is the cousin of Lois Lane, reporter’s-blood is in her, and she eventually gets a job working at the Daily Planet. She had previously discovered the secret Clark had been hiding from the rest of the world — that he was from Krypton and had superhuman abilities. When Clark teams up with other newly-established superheroes Green Arrow, Impulse, Black Canary, Cyborg, and Aquaman, Chloe Sullivan joins the group under the codename
“Watchtower.” Any DC Comics fan knows that this collaboration of superheroes becomes what is known as the Justice League, and Watchtower is the base of operations for the team.
When Chloe uses Dr. Fate’s helmet to help out Oliver Queen in the season ten premiere, she disappears (apparently to have died). But there are hints given throughout the season that she is still alive
(the card Lois receives after being engaged, and the text message on the phone of one of the new school newspaper editors, to name a couple).
Chloe Sullivan is one of the most important characters in the ten-season journey of Smallville. The writers did an excellent job of incorporating a character that was previously not part of the original Superman story without damaging the history of Clark Kent. The relationship to Lois Lane gave Smallville fans an immediate affinity for the character, and the designation as the soon-to-be Justice League’s Watchtower has given her even more acceptance. We can only guess if Chloe Sullivan will make one last appearance in the final season of the show that has given her a permanent place in the DC Universe.
